Is Oil Sludge Recycling Profitable? A Real Cost Analysis
Oil refineries and food factories often treat oil sludge as pure waste — something to pay someone to haul away. But pressed correctly, that sludge is a revenue stream, not a cost.
Here is the math for a typical mid-size refinery generating 5 tons of oil sludge per month. The sludge contains 15-25% residual oil by weight. At 20% oil content, 5 tons of sludge contains 1 ton of recoverable oil. Even at a conservative industrial oil price of $800 per ton, that is $800 of recovered value per month.
On the cost side, hazardous waste disposal for oily sludge can run $200-500 per ton depending on the country. Pressing the sludge reduces its volume and weight by roughly 60-70%, cutting the disposal bill by the same percentage.
The press itself is a one-time investment. A 60-75 MPa oil sludge press costs a few thousand dollars and pays back within 6-12 months for most mid-size operations. The dry cake after pressing can sometimes be sold as a component in animal feed or fertilizer, adding a small extra income.
The exact numbers depend on your sludge composition and local disposal costs, but the direction is clear: pressing oil sludge is almost always profitable. The only buyers who do not benefit are those with very small sludge volumes where the machine does not have enough material to process.
